An exciting new addition to the Monk House Design family is New Zealand label Penny Sage, a strong and independent label which is of outstanding quality, design and integrity.
Kate Megaw founded her contemporary womenswear label Penny Sage in 2011, which began with hand painted and hand dyed articles, to now, where the label is available in many special places around the world. Each collection is carefully considered, keeping within two collections a year, not rushing any process and inviting opportunities to work with artists and makers that make up the Penny Sage family.
Reading into Penny Sage's history you can see that Kate has been creating clothes from a young age, designing what she wants to wear rather than what is circling within the industry. Working in a studio that is close to the centre of the city and keeping her resources and makers local (30km from her studio) which means that she can control what is being made. The quality over quantity factor results in timeless pieces that can be carried over from season to season. Using natural fibres such as wool, linen, silk and cotton accompanied by simple details, the functionality and reliability of the garments speak for themselves.
The current collection is a mix of Kate's 'dream' wardrobe such as easy wearing denim, silks in David Hockney inspired hues such as blues, chestnut browns and honey beige, accompanied by soft merino knits and custom prints. A stand out is the Mariah Wrap shirt made from Silk Organza with hand embroidered flowers designed by New Zealand artist Marta Katarzyna Buda.
The current Autumn Winter 2018 collection, titled 'Robin' is named after Kate's Grandmother Robin Sage and her earliest memories of growing up in rural New Zealand. "The style and fashion available at the time was heavily influenced by the isolation from the rest of the world, the landscape and also the natural surroundings. Robin draws on this notion of fashion nostalgia and the people who were bravely trying new things with their personal style –– especially people who made clothing to express themselves."
The Penny Sage team has kindly shared some photos of Kate’s studio in New Zealand.
