Valentine’s Day; The long-standing all-important romantic day on the western calendar has its origins in the Roman festival named ‘Lupercalia' which celebrated the coming of spring. Rituals included pairing off men and women by lottery amongst other things. At the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I replaced Lupercalia with St. Valentine’s Day. It came to be celebrated as a day of romance from about the 14th century.
Today it can mean a variety of things to different people. Lovers ignore it, partners really mean it, friends stand by it as the day to show how much your friendship means. Does it matter? Why not celebrate the ones you love? Do you need an excuse to celebrate love and friendship? Not really, but we're running with it!
This year we teamed up with Cathy Tipping of New End and Cecilia Fox, the very talented florist who works in and around Melbourne, creating a beautiful window display to launch a limited edition love heart and locket necklace collection.
The window display features a wreath of Blackberry vines, with a host of beautiful orchids placed within and around the wreath. Orchids traditionally symbolise love, luxury, beauty and strength, whilst it was thought in Mid-Mediterranean folklore that Christ's Crown of Thorns was made of blackberry runners. Symbolism indeed..maybe it's not all fair in love.
Newend has made a series of exclusive lockets and broken heart charms. The broken heart charms come as a whole broken heart, in which you can keep both sides until you're ready to give the other side away, or two separate pieces of one heart, which are designed to be worn separately, by you and your BFF/GF/BF. There is even space on the back of the broken heart charms to engrave a little message. The lockets open up to reveal a small space for a lock of hair (if you're doing things old school), a trinket of some kind or a small flower.
These limited edition jewellery pieces are available in store and online under tab ‘Valentines’. Indulge in the history of this romantic day, you know you want to…. xx
