Spring has sprung and the shop is looking fresher than ever thanks to Sarah Parkes of Smalltown!
Sarah has been making big waves for a number of years now, creating contemporary macramé from her Collingwood studio. Coming from a graphic design background Sarah has always had an interest in working with her hands, but it wasn’t until 2010, after having taught herself how to weave macramé from 70s craft books, that she turned the craft into a business.
Her belief in ‘simplicity of process and purity of material’ saw her break away from the crafty-kitsch associations that usually categorise the craft. Using synthetic rope Sarah creates fresh stylised vibes that transcend the traditional, moving from practical to sculptural and then back again.
This year she's released her first collection entitled ‘Square*Squared’, the collection examines form and the ability to manipulate structure through the repetition of a single knot. By controlling the density of her knots she can create different structures and forms, all of which are conceived from the same beginnings.
Sarah has filled the shop with a selection of her knotted egg lights and tube pendants, hand dipped in enamel paint they are so good it hurts! You'll also find our walls adorned in her plant pods, green fronds dripping from their wide mouths.
Hand crafted to order in Melbourne come have a peek now, we bet you'll be smitten! The installation runs until September 15.
Also - a big thanks to our friends at Lygon St. Nursery for filling Sarah's plant pods and making our store look super lush! And, as always, to Sarah's partner Scott McCormack of Roopacorp! We couldn't have done it without his muscle.
